1: How do the names look at the moment ??
2: Are they in a consistent format ?
3: What seperates first name and last name ?
4: Are there any instances of middle names etc that may throw out a formula ?? Rgds

Steve - just as a tip, you don't actually need the concatenate function.
Assuming fist names in colA and surnames in colB
=Left(A1,1)&"."&B1
will do the same as the concatenate function Rgds
