Hi,

I need to rebuild a 98 machine and the user wants me to save her macros. How do I go about doing that? It is Word 97.

Ask the user where her macros are stored, has she created new document templates? If she stares at you as if you were mad or talking in an unknown language, then the macros are probably in the most recently used normal.dot. That is the document template at the base of all word templates and documents and is where Word normally saves user macros.

Being as you will be saving the lady's documents and (if there) other templates, and will transfer them to the new build, then all you have to concentrate on is getting "her" normal.dot put on top of the one that is created when you reinstall word. Either do a Windows search for it or look in Word under Tools, Options, Files (or similar, I use the German version) and see where the group templates are stored.

When you have found it, replace it with the user's one. Get her to start Word and watch her face.

All the best

As Carol said, saving normal.dot should do it. But, just to be safe, I would backup all *.doc and *.dot files. Then after "fixing" the office environment, copy the saved files back to where they belong. During the copy phase, you will be able to see what files were modified. normal.dot being the main one and, of course, all the other document files.
