Okay, running Word 2000 and here is what's going on. I open Word, write a document, and ~some~ of the time after I save the file and close the program, I'll receive the following error message:

"Word encountered file corruption while opening c:\Program Files\...Normal.dot. Part of this document may be recoverable. Attempt recovery now? "

Anybody ever seen anything like that?

Have you tried finding and renaming normal.dot (to, say, normal.old?) Word will recreate this file. Corruption can lead to the error message you're getting.

Your normal.dot file is corrupt. Delete the file and word will recreate it the next time you open up the program.

Okay, as a follow up to this subject, this is where I found "normal" stuff on my computer that was related to Microsoft Word:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\1033\css\normal.tem

There are 3 files within:

NORMAL - Cascading Style Sheet Document
NORMAL - Bitmap Image
NORMAL - Setup Information

As suggested by previous responses, I removed those 3 files from the folder and put them somewhere else temporarily. I then started Word to see if it would recreate the files, however no files were created but it still ran Word perfectly. My sheet still looks the same, and I can open and save, but no files were created.

Did I do something wrong?

Depending on your OS, and on how your network is configured, normal.dot could be in various places.

With Win 2000, or XP, it is commonly found under Document and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates, where username is the login account name.

You should not have deleted the CSS file, but I am not sure what the final consequence will be. Do you use Word for web pages? If not, don't worry about it. However, find normal.dot and delete it.

Do a search for specificaly normal.dot. Remove that file only. If there are multiple copies, delete them all. But just "normal.dot". If you want to be truly careful, move them to another folder first.
