Hi,

Trying to get a used MICROS terminal (WS4LX) running for a customer. Background is he bought two Micros terminals about four years ago, closed his restaurant after three years. He is now opening a new place but wants to use the "main" Micros terminal again, but doesn't want to pay Micros for support. More background is he used to use both terminals then took one out of service - so that is why he calls one his "main" terminal - it was the only one they were using for the last year of their business, it had a cash drawer and printer attached, and I believe another remote printer in the kitchen.

I screwed this up by taking the compact flash card out of the terminal, thinking I could simply make a backup copy of it before making any changes - he wanted to erase all of the existing data, but keep the structure if possible (menu items, etc.) He didn't want to start completely from scratch. I inserted the card into a card reader and could see the data, then started to make a copy of it and it froze up. Tried to "eject" it properly, wouldn't do it - so I pulled it out of the reader, put it back in, and received the dreaded "you need to format" message. So I then ran some recovery software on the card and was able to recover data, but when I copy it back to the card again it won't boot the terminal anymore.

I've read through numerous posts on this forum and others about reinstalling the software by using the WCF executable, which I did. But the problem is even when it will boot into Windows CE it doesn't load the Micros software anymore. It gets to a point where it is looking for the "server" on the network, but because he was using this unit only, I didn't bother to hook up the other terminal. So I'm not sure how to get the Micros e7 software loading again - I'm assuming once I do, I can restore the old database files I have backed up, then maybe just clear out the stuff he doesn't need. But I can't get to that point because everything I have read says you need to install the software by connecting it to the "server" or another terminal.

Can anybody provide any assistance? Can the install be done "standalone" from a USB stick or something like that? Thanks in advance...

UPDATE: Micros terminals are WS5. I found that I really messed up the flash card, that's why it wasn't booting at all. I stumbled upon some instructions for factory restore from BIOS. Found the default password in another thread, the factory restore says it is happening, then the system reboots and goes right back to the BIOS screen, tests mem, tests HD, then won't boot into CE (reboots automatically). So for whatever reason, even though it appears the factory restore process is running, it doesn't actually work. Could the compact flash card be completely trashed? It seems to read OK when I put it in a card reader on a Win7 system - I can format it, etc.

Any suggestions as to how I can get the Windows CE running again on this WS5 terminal, so that I can then get the e7 software reinstalled?
