Question Re: CAL usage. Somewhat urgent

Hi all,

I have a somewhat pressing issue. I am in the process of upgrading a server of a client of mine to Windows 2003 Server. They are currently having some network issues that prevent some of the employees from doing their job properly (can't get to some of the shared resources due to a max. number of people per share limitation in XP). Now, I remember in copies of Windows 2000 Server that you just told the server you had X seat licenses and it was fine with that, but I'm afraid W2K3 is a little more strict with it.
The reason I'm asking is that I need to get their server up ASAP (their current network issues are hurting their business), and they bought W2K3 Standard, which comes with the standard 5 CAL's. I also had them order the 25 additional CAL's to cover the amount of people in their office (there's 25 total, so it leaves some room for the occasional admin login, etc). It is going to take *at least* 72 hours to get the licenses though, at the very quickest (I was surprised by this - why does this take so long?) So this would mean I can't set up their server for another 3 days? hm..
So what I'm wondering is - is W2K3 like Windows 2000 Server in that you can just tell it "I have 30 licenses?" and it's OK with that? Or do I need the actual license codes? If not, I can set them up, and then the 3 day wait for the licenses won't be an issue..

Any info on this matter would be *MUCH* appreciated.

If memory servers from when I last installed Windows you don't need the license code. You just need to tell it you have x licenses.

I tend to agree with medenny.

When I set up my standard server, I just had to tell it how many.

They only thing from what I remember from studing for teh MCSE is, I believe you have to register with Microsoft if you purchase a retail version of Standard 2003 as compared to an open license version. But that doesn't really have anything to do with the cals.

I could be wrong, I am a little green at this yet.
