I have a MS SBS 2003. I know I can no longer run SBS 2003 in application mode as in SBS 2000. I have another computer that is not being used that I can add as a member server of the SBS 2003 server. My question is what software do I need? Can I run either MS 2000 or 2003 server on this member server? Or does terminal server come with a runtime version of 2000 or 2003 server? I alread have a 30 cal license on the main SBS 2003 server, so what kind of cals do I need for this new server. MS should not make purchasing software more cumbersome than brain surgery. Thanks for any help!!!

Terminal server is a component of 2000 or 2003.

You'll need a TS CAL for each user / device that will be connecting to Terminal Services.

If you had a W2K domain you automatically had a TS CAL if the users were using W2K or XP Pro.
For 2003 you need a separate one unfortunately.

Although depending on when you bought your W2K or XP you can get a 'freebie' license for 2003. You'd have to call Microsoft to get the codes though and prove the date of purchase.
Worth doing though since the CAL's aren't cheap.

Revisting this issue again. More specifically, I need to know what I need in the way of software. I already have MS SBS 2003. I know I need to put the terminal services server on a seperate server. What do I need to load on this seperate server? Does it need to have another 25 user cal of server 2003 running? Will the terminal services software just have a run time version? It doesn't seem to make sense to have another version of server 2003 running with the same amount of CALs installed. These are the questions that I haven't been able to get a solid answer to. I appreciate any and all input. Thanks

ok, I got the Windows 2000 server setup as a member server of the SBS 2003 Server. I got the TS up and running on the Windows 2000 server w/the license server on the SBS 2003. My 90 days will soon be running out. Do I need 2003 TS Cals or 2000 TS CALs - or does it matter? I can find 2003 TS CALs, but very hard to find 2000 TS CALs. Thanks

You can purchase 2003 per-device TS CALs. These will work for both 2003 and 2000 terminal servers. Make sure they are per-device and not per-user. Per-user will only work with 2003 terminal servers.

Ok, when doing per device and I connect with 1 computer & 1 printer that is attatched to the computer via USB or Parallel - do I need one CAL or Two?

?

CALs are for computers, not any peripherals attached to the computer.

thanks. If I am logging into the Domain with user abc from computer 123, and then attatch to the TS and login with the same user abc - will this suck up two CALs?
