HI,
i'm building a new server, actually i ordered a tower server without any hard drives. I want to install RAID1 on it. What do i need for a controller? I want to use SCSI disks (2 of course). I want to be sure i order the right hardware for it, this particular motherboard doesn't come with a scsi controller so would i need to just order a scsi raid controller along with the scsi disks?
This is my first scsi build.
thanks in advance!

purchase a scsi controller (pci) that is compatable for your server. install it, cable up the drives, then depending what brand of server / controller, you will need to get to a config menu to setup the raid. once this is done, saved, then you will reboot and begin installing your OS.

what brand of server are you using?

Scottie,
thanks, we are purchasing an IBM tower server and it comes with an onboard sata controller but we want scsi.

We currently have a hardware raid1 using SATA drives on our current system but are unhappy with it.

actually i see the ibm pc comes with an onboard raid controller, so i guess i wouldn't need the raid, just the scsi contr. correct?

No, you would need a RAID SCSI controller. A standard SCSI card is totally different to a RAID card. Also, check whether you want hot-swap or not. As a point of interest, why didn't you buy a server which has built-in RAID?

Castor,
It does come with an onboard raid controller, i just need the scsi controller now i think and the scsi drives.
Why you ask? price of course. this IBM unit is $675 without drives. I've found 146gb scsi seagates U320s for $278 or 160gb for 319 each, then add approx. another $200 for the controller and i'm done.
here take a look at the ibm and tell me if i'm correct about the raid controller:

yea, raid -scsi controller... guess i just took that for granted... anyway... this box looks like it comes with an integrated hardware level raid 0/1. do some research on the serverraid-7e from IBM.

guys,
I found out this model's integrated raid controller is only for sata drives but they have an identical model with scsi raid onboard just costs a little more.
now to find out if i can put redhat on it! :)
thanks for the help!
