question about "NET USE"

Can you use this even if you dont have any network card?

I can use this without problem when I have a network drive attached but as soon as I disconnect, I will have erros. (I am on a laptop with network card on the docking bay.)


Purpose is to map a folder from a local machini to be use by the same machine.

Or how to map a directory to make it like say "X:" drive

Net use creates a mapped drive from you machine to a shared folder on a remote machine. If you machine or the other machine are not both on the network, it does not work. If you are trying to do it on the same machine, you would create a "shortcut" and name it what ever you want.

Why dont you just use the Subst command and then you will have a virtual drive.

Ex: create folder named shared "or whatever you want"
in batch file
Subst X: C:\shared
You can put this bat file inside your startup so everytime you reboot you will have a X drive.
That way you will have a X drive but it will be really whatever you have inside the folder shared.
Just another idea for ya.

It worked, but how are you going to remove this virtual drive?

What do you mean remove the virual drive. Why do you want to remove it? It is not a partition or anything like that. If you have no more use for it just take the batch file out of your startup and then you will not have the X drive.

Ok, I understand, so the next time you restart the computer you will not have this drive anymore right? ok. But this person doesn't and dont't want to restart his laptop but he instead hibernate. The reason is because of the waiting time for the machine to boot up. Dont ask me more...he he he... he is my boss.

The purpose again is... to have an X drive mapped to our server when he is at the office then mapped to the local drive when he is at home.

Ok, net use cannot be used on virtual drive....

and if you want to remove it...

subst x: /d

this deletes the virtual drive...
