Query about moving hard drive to a different computer

Moving a hard drive containing the WinXP OS from one computer to another is a very desirable alternative to reinstalling all of the programs, transferring data, and getting Outlook data moved (which can be problematic if the versions are too far apart).

However, when moving a hard drive containing the WinXP OS from one computer to another, a Windows reinstallation seems to be necessary UNLESS the two mainboards have the same chipset. Otherwise, I've found that Windows will start to load until it gets to the chipset drivers and then it locks up. It seems to be completely impossible if one computer is running an AMD cpu and the other Intel.

I've noticed that when I install a new copy of WinXP, the chipset drivers are not required for it to initially load and run, and they are loaded from the mainboard's utilty CD after XP is up and running.

Since the problem seems to be in the chipset drivers, it would seem that I should be able to use Device Manager to uninstall the hard drive controllers, transfer the hard drive, then bring up WinXP on the new machine without the chipset drivers, and then install the drivers?

Has anyone had experience doing this? Will it work?

If not, does anyone know of a reliable means to transfer hard drives from Intel to AMD machines, or the other way around?

I have read where people had luck doing the remove driver trick. Sysprep with reseal option should also work. I have never tryed eather I have alway had good luck doing a repair install after replaceing bad mother boards. You only lose the windows updates

copying the drive would not work, since xp queries the hardware and compares it to what's in a file (wpa.dbl). it looks for hardware and assigns 10 points. if you pass 7 out of 10, no activation is required, otherwise, it will ask for activation. the hardware that are polled are:
cpu id
ram
hdd
cd
nic mac (network interface card - media access control)
nic has 3 points assigned to it
video card
dockable
....
so, if you get a mobo with a built-in nic, right there you have lost 3 points, and everything else must be same as what it was before.

Your assumption is partially correct... but it is not the CHIPSET Drivers but actually the Controller Drivers especially of the IDE Controller...

They need to be replaced with the standard XP drivers in the Windows DIR, then you need to reset them in the REGISTRY aswell...

Copy and Paste into Notepad then safe as xxx.reg (where xxx is anything you want) and double click to merge with the Registry...

Thanks to you all.

A new activation is only a minor nuisance. I've never had any problems re-activating WinXP, although the internet activation is often not accepted and I have to make a phone call to get a new number.

After the first time I tried to move a hard drive from a board w/an Intel cpu to one w/an AMD cpu, Windows seemed to start up OK, but somewhere before Windows Explorer came up the OS locked up. Since the OS was booting from the hard drive, I had always assumed that it hung when the IDE controllers from the old mainboard were loaded. Doing a repair installation of Win didn't solve the problem. After a few tried, I just stopped trying.

It would really be nice if someone came up with a painless way to just move a drive from one mainboard to another, regardless of whether it was an AMD or Intel cpu.

This is one of those chores that really deserves attention.

BigBadBen - sound's good, but I'm reluctant to do so much messing with the Registry unless I know what each change does, and there's a lot there.
