I have quark express 6.0, our printers only have version 4. Is there a way of saving as version 4?

They need quark as they need to make final amendments so pdf is not an option.

any help would be gratefully appreciated.

To get from Q6 to Q4...

1) Open the Q6 document in Q6 and save down to Q5
2) Open the Q5 document in Q5 and save down to Q4

If a print service provider does not have your software, seek another service provider. Quark 5 has been out for some time. A printer that does not upgrade to current design software (or software that was released over 2 years ago) is not really interested in staying in the printing business. Seek another printer.

thanks I was wondering if there was anything direct as I have 20 or so files to convert.

This is not direct?

The most direct approach would be to find a print service provider that uses Quark 6.

Downsaving is a reckless way to manage documents as some features may not save down properly. It is best to keep your documents in the Quark 6 format.

I've just sent a PDF out to all our suppliers (if they can open it). Telling them what we are running and that if they want our business, they will have to invest in theirs...

No replies from them, but it might help our poor print room cousins justify the upgrades to management

I just have to mention that not all service bureaus are going to upgrade, at least not soon. We outsource to a number of specialized companies (mostly thermography) who are still using QXP 4 and absolutely are not upgrading. Though it's annoying for me to now have to save all my Quark 6 files as eps, bring into Illustrator, convert to outlines and then export to a legacy version, the companies do a great job for a good price. Their system works, so who am I to tell them otherwise? You don't always have the option to find another vendor.

Why EPS>Illy>outline>export legacy? This seems like a lot of effort.

Is something wrong with Quark 6's PDF output?

I totally understand your situation with 'specialised' suppliers, we are in the same position.

But time stands still for no man, should your business suffer (having to leave a legacy mac on-line and the extra time you have to put in to covert files. Included the time spent to do this and all of a sudden the job has become more expensive) for the sake of others unwillingness to embrace the future?

The bottom line is...you cannot feel sorry for businesses who are not prepared to invest in their own future, forcing their hand short term may help them to survive long term.
