Putting large files and folders in Program Files

I dont share my pc with anyone but I started out "hiding" stuff in folders in program files. Then i started putting more folders and more folders inside of program files.
My question is: Is it ok to treat "program files" the same as any other folder or will it eventually slow my system down or cause any other problems.
My guess is that it wont but there's plenty of people here who know a great deal more than me.
I remember asking the same thing about putting folders on my desktop that have, say, a large amount of mp3's in them. Most people felt that it wouldnt matter where i put them on my hard drive, but some people felt it was not a good idea to use the desktop in this manner and that it was better to have a folder on my c drive that was by itself.
This may all sound silly but i think its a question worth asking, i dont mind showing my ignorance. My system does seem to work fine so i think all is well but i would like to know for sure if i can.
thanks

garebo,

Wow!!!, that is a long time.....

Did you perform a dead boot(not timed) & shut down between these? I find that when many files settings & the like are altered the first time up & down captures these (takes time), and the subsequent starts have this stuff accounted for (saved as settings etc) & as there are minimum alterations from that point you get a fair estimation of boot time.

You do seem to be loading, initiating many routines but that is your option.

You might find some assistance in TweakUI at MS, you may already have it??

Also this might point out some of the housekeeping chores being done - not?

Did you ever get your bike back running???

My bike?
Gee, am i getting that old and forgetful?

I had turned the pc right off and then turned it back on again a few times. Not only that, that has always been the case, time-wise. So its no surprise to me. These times would be accurate and will be accurate tomorrow as well, lol.

Part of it is goback, but reading that support page from m\soft now leads me to think its my cable modem. Reminds me of win 98se and nic card issues. I guess i have just gotten used to a long bootup time, lol.

I dont have a lot of stuff booting up if thats what you are referring to. I keep my startup folder lean, although i dont go thru services and turn them off. I have turned off a few, like messenger and the like, thats all.

However, it takes about a minute to turn my pc off as well. Again, i bet its the modem.

I'll have to read that support page some more. thanks for the tip on that!

Oh ya, as for housekeeping. I do do housekeeping but i can tell you that i am a firm believer in leaving scandisk and defrag alone. I feel scandisk is way more trouble than its worth. In my opinion scandisk causes way more problems than it ever fixes. Since i stopped using it i have no more hard drive problems so i am convinced on that. If it affects bootup time i can live with that. But i dont ever have system problems or hard drive failures, nothing. That is based on what i have learned over the years.
And utilities that clean up broken links and such, again, they cause more problems than they fix, same with registry progs. I do my own manual registry deletions when i uninstall a program.
The programs i like are avg a\virus, trend-micro online scan, popup stopper, m\soft antispyware, adaware, spybot s&d.
To each his own i guess. Either my modem, which is very old and they wont give me a new one, or something else causes long bootups but i have 5 pcs, and run 2 of them all day and night and never have any system problems, never have to rebuild, simply never have any major probs. Only time that i have it was traced to trojans\worms, that sorta thing. So when i say i never had any probs i mean probs caused by what i do or dont do. When you are on the net a lot you are bound to pick up trojans and the like, especially when you go to wa..z sites, lol. But other than that, nothing.

As far as i am conc

just to add in my two pence worth, is it not worth clearing out the prefetch directory ? I do it every two months or so. of course the first boot afterwards is slower but after that it speeds up quite considerably

just a thought of course........

Oh, ya, i do that. Didnt mention each and every job. You need to clean out temp files, etc, etc.
There's a few others, but i just woke up, lol.
Mainly i just dont use scandisk, registry cleaners and so-called windows repairers( a la norton). Defrag is more of a choice, nothing really wrong with defrag as there is with scandisk. To me, scandisk is like poison.
This is only my opinion, not gospel of course.
But it works for me. I could point out that years ago when i used scandisk, registry cleaners, windows repairers, etc, that i had a lot more problems than i do now. And i do feel that is so. However, i have to temper that with the fact that i know a lot more now, use a different os, etc. So its not all down to one fact. Still, what i say i truly feel is good advice. But we all have to do what we feel is right for ourselves.

I forgot to add that windows image acquisition was on manual, good as off, but i turned it off. I remember now that i went thru the list of services from a website a while back and turned off or to manual those i didnt need.
That didnt affect my boot time.

But when i unhooked the modem, well i lost most of my boot time, down to just under a minute. With goback installed, thats got to be pretty good. With goback uninstalled that would likely bring me down the under 50 seconds.
I remember bitching at my isp but they told me that their testing shows the modem working properly. In their defense, i download using bittorrents and downloads are very fast. Maybe i can get after them to replace the modem due to poor boot times. Worth a try anyway.

rvnguy: I still havent remembered the bike thing. When my bike was stolen or when Karen got into a bicycle accident?
Maybe someone else? Or maybe i have forgotten. Its my age and my meds, least thats my excuse and im stickin to it.

Either way, thanks for thinking about me!
