Ok, i have this fan in my computer, not my power supply fan, and not my heat sink fan, i have a little on connected to the motherboard. And it makes terrible terrible noises. Well i was gettin pissed at it so i punched the case. That would stop it sometimes. Well, today i was playin a game, and the fan was getting loud again. So i punched it hard. Well the game froze, so i had to shut down. Now the thing is this. I can access stuff just fine from both hard drives ( i have 2). The only problem so far, is that the sound is distorted (i have onboard sound) like if i play an mp3 on winamp, you can hear the background music just fine, but the singer is all quiet and sounds digitally broken down, if you know what i mean. Their voice sounds like it was recorded at 29 kbps but the songs are actually recorded at anywhre from 320 - 160 kbps. Well my question is, does that sound like my hard drives? or is it my onboard sound? Also, do you think my hard drive could crash from this? Any other things that could go wrong?

Well the main thing is, everything so far is workin fine, except sound....

I know it was VERY VERY VERY EXTREMELY DUMB to punch my computer...... I have learned my lesson.

Thx for any responses

Depends which side of the case you punched, really.

If it was the side on which the motherboard is mounted, then, at worst, you could have damaged the mobo, and performance could be flaky from now on.

Get a can of sprayduster - blowing the dust and stuff out of your fan(s) may make it quieter. Alternatively, new fans are cheap.

I hope this helps CitrixEngineer@yahoo.co.uk

Don't punch computers again - my first year living in dorms the floors were uneven in places, causing rattling in the case, pushing it around enough caused a harddrive to develop bad sectors and I lost a great deal of information... DO NOT TRUST SCANDISK TO DETECT BAD CLUSTERS!!!

With fans, what I commonly do is rattle them up while they're on, and this typically stops whatever was causing the noises. I'll either stop the fan with my finger or when it's a power supply fan, I'll stick a screwdriver in there. You probably won't get too many guys here recommending doing this, but worst case scenario you have to buy a new fan, which you were going to do anyways to get rid of the noises.

For what to do in your situation, first get a backup of all your important files. If the only problem with your system is the sound is distorted, maybe the only thing affected was the sound chip. You could purchase a pci sound card, which will give you superior quality over an onboard sound as a bonus.

Since so far you've only noticed audio problems, you may have gotten lucky. Toss in an actual soundcard and see if the problem goes away.
I think it's unlikely your HD would only demonstrate these audio symptoms if you had done damage to it.

Ok, so today I went out to Circuit City, and I bought a Soundblaster Audigy Gamers. It works GREAT! But see here's the prob. Since I know that the sound card works....I still have the same problem, therefore it has to be my hard drive. My question is, how can I tell if the whole hard drive is bad? How can I tell if its goin to crash? Can I still stick stuff in there and it wont get corrupted? Oh yea, I have 2 hard drives, and both of them have the same symptoms. But my 2nd hard drive has more problems than my 1st one. Most of the mp3's and movies that I have sound like r2-d2 is talkin instead of them. Should I go buy a new hard drive? I mean all the videos that i have (I have a couple whole movies on my 2nd hard drive). The video is just fine, no problems there, its JUST the sound.

What is happening??

Thx for any replies.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! Oh boy i screwed up this time! Ok as you could see I thought that it was my hard drive....so i started to delete things.............

Well it turns out....that it is my heapphone extensions that are goin wack...

And as you well know im sure, movies take up 700+ MB of hard disk and when you delete it....its gone....

Well I just lost 2 movies, and a couple episodes of cowboy bebop.......

So just disregard that last post plz....I am not thinking clearly right now :)

Thx anywayz

Have you tried a different set of speakers? The odds of your harddrive corrupting all audio data, and ONLY audio data on both drives has got to be one in a hundred trillion. And with a pci sound card, you are using different physical circuitry getting data from the cpu and memory over to the pci slot as opposed to the onboard sound chip. If it were the memory or dma controller that's bad, your computer wouldn't work at all. If it were your cpu, again the computer wouldn't work at all.

Maybe the plug on the end of your speaker cable got busted somehow. This is about all I can think of that's similar between the setups with the onboard sound and pci card - and that wouldn't affect any other operation of your computer.
