Publisher cannot create a temporary working file

Hey all,

I have a user trying to save files locally from MS Publisher98 and she keeps getting the following error: "publisher cannot create a temporary working file". She is running Windows XP SP1 on her computer. Has anyone else run across this error? She has "Power User" rights but I'm thinking she needs access to some obscure folder. I found one thread in Tek-Tips on this error but it was someone using Publisher97 on a Windows 2000 machine, and the post was in September of 02. Any help here would be greatly appreciated (other than recommendations to upgrade to current--hopefully next year we can do some software upgrades).

What is the user's default file location? If it's, for instance, drive A, then there's probably not enough room on a floppy to make a temporary file. Or, see if you can check other settings for Publisher (don't have it installed at the moment, sorry)... Can you find out from another user where THEIR temp files get created? That's what you need to know...then you can figure out what might be going on in that location ...

Hi Anne,

I'm down at her computer right now and I tried to save a test publication to My Documents and the error popped up. I double checked and she has full access to the My Documents folder. BUT, if I login as myself (I have everything privileges) I can save documents without any errors. Any ideas about what's up with that?

Joe: Check the permissions on the PC. I bet money it's something in there. I helped someone a couple weeks ago. We ended up doing EVERYTHING and finally ended up in the permissions in the WinXP under Users and just gave access to everything (virtually). Don't forget the user isn't creating the file, the system is, so maybe the system doesn't haver permission? I'm NO Windows guru, particularly XP. But when I went in there, I saw permissions for the system too. Hm... But I don't know why hers would have changed.

Also, check out a Windows XP forum and ask how the permissions might affect, etc...

I so much want to help more, but I'm no Pub or Win guru.
