Public Folder Send As Feature

I have public folder which is used to for people to submit help questions.

Two people have been granted Send As permission so that they can answer the help question with the address of the Public Folder in the From field. This is supposed to keep their own email address private.

(Example: instead of a recipient getting a response from janedoe@company.com they get a response from helpfolder@company.com.)

However, I find when I view the complete header of the email message that has been reponded to the Return-Path lists the address of the sender's private address(janedoe@company.com) and not the one listed in the From field (helpfolder@company.com)

Can this be changed?

I am using Exchange 5.5 SP4 on NT Server SP6. The client is Outlook 2000 and 98.

Sounds as if they are just sending a reply and not filling in the from field if so then email will have their email address when sent. Its worth checking to see if this happens all the time or is just occasionaly....

I actually watched to make sure they were doing the procedure correctly. The same problem occurs

Is the public folder hidden from GAL not to sure if this would cause this problem but its only a suggestion, does it work if you set up another public folder and test and give permissions and test it?

I tried the same experiment on another folder and I get the same results. Both are not in GAL.

This may answer youre question then...


Several scenarios:
You want a user to be able to reply to messages sent to a public folder with the folder's address.
You want a user to be able to reply with another mailbox's address -- without the user's own address appearing anywhere on the reply.
You want to be able to send using the return address of a distribution list in the Global Address List (GAL).
The solution is the same in all cases: You must grant Send As permission on the folder or mailbox using the Exchange Administrator program or Active Directory. Send As is granted via accounts and groups, not mailboxes and Exchange distribution lists. If you want a user to send with a folder's address,

the folder must not be hidden.

Once the user has Send As permission, they can use View | From Field in Outlook to display the From box and either click From to choose from the Address Book or type in the name of the public folder or other mailbox. If the public folder is hidden from the GAL, the user should go to the folder's Properties page and add the folder's address to their own address book

Thanks. I have done all of those procedures and I have no problems Sending As another address. Trouble is when you view the header information the user's email address is displayed in the Return-Path instead of the Public Folder's email address.

Anyone one smart enough to view the header can easily determine who really sent the message.

Ok seems like the only solution you have then is to create a factitious email address just for the purposes of answering these emails and give permissions to send on behalf for the user then it wont matter if they check the header of the email.....


Paranoia is reality on a finer scale....
