hi,
I have a Dell Power Edge 1500SC Server with a Dell 6G147 PSU MAX OUTPUT = 350W.

Recently when i boot up everthing goes well, but then it blacks out completly and when i restart, it does the same, it stay on for a while then shuts off.

A mate suggested that the power supply was discharging and not functioning normal.

I don't know please help.

rgds,
Phiggy.

There's a good chance it's the PSU that's no longer capable of supplying the required voltages. Electronic components within the PSU can deteriorate due to ageing/poor design/mains spikes or glitches etc. I've had PSUs suffer the Bad Cap syndrome - see website. You could try measuring the PSU output voltages to see if you can detect rails that may be sagging. Try relieving some of the strain on the PSU see if that makes any difference - unplug any cards from motherboard slots, disconnect molex power connectors to all drives. Now see if the PSU will keep the motherboard powered up for longer than before.

It might be that overheating is the problem. Does the BIOS inform you of CPU temperature? Is the case and CPU heatsink assembly bunged up with accumulated dust and dirt? May be worth blowing it clean with some compressed air...

Roger hit the two most frequent causes of random shutwown: Power problems and Overheating. Other causes usually write something to the Event Viewer.

I'd guess with its age it's going to be the PSU, but check the CPU fan for operation and dust and maybe re-seat the HSF before buying a new PSU.

Ok,
I guess my PSU has had it.
