I currently use PSP 6.1 and love it. The only reason why I don't use Photoshop is because I've never got round to trying it. As a web designer I'd be interested to know which of the two people prefer. A mate of mine has both and says he prefers neither as they offer different things.<br><br>Just interested.

I don't know all the details, but they do offer somewhat different feature sets. If PSP does everything you need stick with it. Ok, I actually went out and paid $550 for Photoshop 5, and I still use Paint Shop Pro more. I find it more intuitive, it gets what I need to do done, and it costs almost 10% of what Photoshop does.<br><br>I find Photoshop is better if you're working with either print or the web... but Paint Shop Pro has been able to accomodate all of my needs. Maybe it's because I started working with Paint Shop Pro years before I started with Photoshop and I never got accustomed to the Adobe GUI. Although I have PSP I think it just comes down to options. Photoshop is supposed to have more options (thats probably why it costs so much). Also Photoshop is listed more in the ads for "designers wanted".
I say if you're comfortable with PSP then continue to use it. And you're probably right about "feeling more comfortable with it" because you have been using it for so long and when you get another program you have to get used to it.

I curently have both loaded, and at times, have used both programs to create one image. this is aggeravating, but I think I have gotten used to it.
I do, however use PSP 7 more often simply because I started out with that. I agree with imotic, I don't think that the learning curve is worth it. theEclipse

I use PSP7, and I love it. When I loaded Photoshop, it totally messed my whole system up, then it ended up being too much of a pain to use. I deleted it.
I love PSP7...stick with PSP.

I've used both PSP 7 and Photoshop 5.5. I think it was 5.5; I was so unimpressed with the overdone and unintuitive GUI that I quit using it.
I've enjoyed using the PSP 7 "Enhance Photo" features, such as the "JPEG Artifact Removal" and "Clarify" features. The algorithms in the program are pretty well done, because I usually don't have to fiddle around too much with different settings to get what I want, and the Proof, Auto Proof and Reset options on the feature dialogs are great.
PSP 7 has some of the lighting effects that I used to use in Photoshop, but not all of them. And Photoshop has a few more effects filters. However, to supplement PSP 7 (which I rarely need to do), I found a $30 program from IBM called "Perfect Photo" that pretty much rounds out any PSP "deficiencies". And PSP7 + Perfect Photo = 'Way fewer $$$ than Photoshop Ola kakou aloha,

When considering which graphics program you want to buy or use, the very first thing to understand is that in the end, you will still be working with raster or vector objects in programs like Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop and Fireworks.
As kprime points out, Paint Shop Pro is well written allowing for near complete control over all of Paint Shop Pro's effects. I think there are pluses and minuses with all three of the afore mentioned programs, like a plus for Photoshop's ability to drag a gardient.

just what i thought since i started using it when it was on version 3...
i have PSP7 and Photoshop 6 installed together, and although i use ps a bit, my fave has always been psp, and with the strength of psp7, i think it can only get better!

helpmegod, i advise you to ask the same question in a Photoshop forum to see who will win. Who did you expect since we all are psp users here. As if asking a shop owner whether his products are good No, i agree with all the users above, although i have never used photoshop, i think that psp is the best program to start with graphics(after Microsoft Paint ) and continue with them

I use both PSP and Photoshop. Like most of the people here I find that both are slightly better than each other at different things.
However, I must say that since I have started looking at a few of the Photoshop tutorials on Designs by Mark (you must know the address by now) and actually starting playing with it that it does rather make PSP look like a bit of a noddy application. Which is highly unfair, because I love PSP.
PSP is unbeatable in terms of it's vector handling, and is great at general web graphics (which I have to design for a living) so on (also the optimization tools are awesome) but, unfortunately, Photoshop is great when it comes the really 'nice' effects.
If you don't believe me, download the trial version of Photoshop 6 and then try the 'chrome text' and 'metal effect' and the 'plastic button' tutorials on designs by mark.
I think, on balance, that both are great packages (how's that for a cop out, eh?) and both have there 'roles'. If you want to do quick, good looking web buttons, backgrounds, etc then PSP is cool (especially with the vector control) but if you want to add that extra 'pizzaz' the Photoshop it has to be.
For a start (sorry to start off again when i was just about to finish) the masking in PSP is a bit lame as is the Alpha Channel handling stuff.
Equally well, Photoshop is very annoying when you copy and paste something and it chucks it on a new layer every time, and the lack of pre-defined shapes, etc.

I find that both programs compliment each other, and if you really want to find out which one is better, I suggest you download both trial versions, and test them yourself, as it is primarily a matter of personal preference..!
I find that PSP is great for whipping up quick graphics, and is a lot easier to use and learn than photoshop... however, photoshop, as petitpal said! is great for that proffessional look, and more fancy things....
anyway, I'd suggest that if budget is a constraint, get psp7, it's great, but if you want to do print quality stuff... use photoshop....

Also, I'd advise strongly to asking the same question in a PS forum as most people here would be bias to psp

I thought I was doing PSP proud until PetitPal pointed out that I'd managed to download the wrong graphics!!! s-)
When I downloaded the right ... good looking with nifty effects ... graphics my spanner slipped out of my hands, into the works and opened up a new debate.
Most of the graphics work I do involves picture elements ... hand drawn, scanned in, mouse modified, manipulated and mixed & matched. I also do some photo restoration, enhancement and combining. I only very occasionally use the filters/effects and don't count comparisons between these the test for graphics programs. To mix metaphors, I see them as the icing on the meat of the cake.
PetitPal's view is that these are half the power of a graphics program and that Photshop has the edge over PSP in this area.
Any volunteers to referee? LOL LOL LOL
