I want to put together an older K6-2 500 system together. Does anyone know the power supply requirements for this cpu? Could I use an older AT Power supply having 200 watts, having 20 amps at +5v and 3 amps at +12v?
If I remember correctly, we used to like to put 250W on the top end K6 CPUs but 200W should be enough. However you really should be getting more than 3A at +12V. All the voltages the AT PSUs had were +/-5 and +/-12 That would be just 153W total (assuming the typical 1A or less on the Neg voltages) - where's the rest of the Watts?

With a standard single hard drive two CDrom setup 200watts should be fine but like all systems add a couple of extra hard drives and a GF3 500Ti and you will soon exceed your power supplies limits.

Thanks to all of you. You have been a big help. This machine will have only 1 HDD, 1 CD and a FDD. But I still don't quite understand the significance of the 3.3V listing on ATX supplies and lack of same on AT power supplies. The board I will be using can take an AT or ATX power connector. From what you are saying, I can use the AT power supply? Will it run hotter? Does the lack of a 3.3V listing mean the power supply cannot switch to this? Does the mobo take care of the switching? I apologise for my ignorance. Perhaps someone can point me toward a good tutorial on power supplies.
