Are there any tech guides on provisioning the 52/53-series SIP-enabled phones via tftp or http? I have had a look through Mitel's edocs but could not see anything.

The link Mitel "SIP Phone 6.0 Release Notes" opens a document where there is a short description on the deployment of SIP phones through FTP.
Click Mitel "SIP Phone FAQ Link" and than "Mitel Configuration Guide (R6.0) Link". This opens up a XLS file with a sample on the files and the parameters to be setup.
There are 2 files to be used:
- MN_Generic.cfg; general settings for all phones
- MN_<MAC>.cfg; individual file per phone with relevant settings
This should help you.
