Protected Files

Hi all,

Does anyone know where I can get a list of the protected files in a Windows 2000 OS? I looked in Microsoft but they just tell me it's the dlls and exes and stuff that were installed by the OS but this is a little vague and how do I know what the OS installed.

Thanks 1101001100110101 ... interesting article. But I guess I wanted a way of knowing which files on a machine were protected. I have created an installation which must try to overwrite some of them and I obviously don't want it to do this but I need to find which ones they are. I found a list in the event viewer but I don't install any of the ones that it is complaining about.

I am not sure if this will help you, but I will say it anyway.

The method I use to identify system files is to first go into "Folder Options" and unselect "Hide Protected Operating System Files" and select "Show Hidden Files and Folders". Now after doing this you can look through WINNT for folders and files that have a faded look to them. The faded files and folders should be system files.

The other way you can accomplish this is to go into cmd and do a "Dir /A:S" of the root
