Promoting member server

What process do you need to follow to promote a stand alone server to a backup domain controller on a domain that obviously already has a primary domain controller?

You cannot natively do this in Windows NT. The server needs to be rebuilt as a domain controller.

So if we already have a PDC, and we want a BDC, we just set up the BDC as if it were a PDC?

you can use Upromote to promote a member server into a bdc, or build a new server and select the BDC option.
