I am trying to promote a windows 2003 server to a DC in a windows 2000 server enviroment and I get the error

"the version of the active dirctory schema of the source forest is not compatible with the version of active directory"

I tried

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, run the adprep.exe /forestprep command from the Windows Server 2003 R2 installation disk 2 on the schema master. To do this, insert the Windows Server 2003 R2 installation disk 2, and then type the following command:
Drive:\CMPNENTS\R2\ADPREP\adprep.exe /forestprep

but that didn't work.. How can I tell what version of schema I am running on my DC?

You have to run the adprep/forestprep and adprep/domainprep on your existing schema master in your environment, are you sure you did that on the right server?

adprep/domainprep must be run on the Infrastructure Master in each domain. adprep/forestprep must be run on the Schema Master. Depending on the size of your domain you will also have to allow time for the changes to propergate throught the forest. To run you must be a domain admin or enterprise admin and a member of the schema admins group.
