Dual PIII 500Mhz processors
1GB RAM.
Raid Array 221 controller
6x 9.1GB wide ultra II scsi drives
Redundant power supplies
Windows 2000 Server

My Problem:

The dual procs did not show up in my windows enviornment. I ran the System Configuration Utility from the SmartStart CD and they are listed there. They show up during the system post. I know about changing the hal in Windows but I wanted to researc the server side to make sure I did it right. After lots of research on HP/Compaq and Microsoft sites I was directed to select the multiprocessor hal, reboot and go into the BIOS and change the ACPI mode to "Full Table Map".

I went into the device manager and changed the hal to "MPS Microprocessor PC" and rebooted. I rebooted after as directed to enter the BIOS looking for a way to change the ACPI mode to "Full Table Map" as per instructions. Upon reboot, The SmartStart CD was not recognized and it tried to boot to Windows and hung. After re-booting again, I received an error at post as follows:

172-1 System Configuration Nonvolatile Memory Invalid

The server would not boot from the CD at this point. After rebooting several times, I found that if I hit F10 during the post it would recognize the array and boot to the SmartStart CD, even though I don't have Compaq's F10 system partition. I decided at this point that I would reset the NVRAM and start over as if it were a new setup with dual procs and then Windows should recognize it and use the right hal. I cleared the NVRAM, using the System Configuration Utility option, saved the settings, and rebooted. Now I get two errors at post:

172- System Configuration Nonvolatile Memory Invalid
Initialization Aborted
172-1 System Configuration Nonvolatile Memory Invalid

I called HP/Compaq support. The representative told me to reset the NVRAM using the SCU from the SmartStart CD. The system will not boot from the CD now. I then tried to boot from the set of floppys for the System Configuration Utility that I made, but it won't recognize the floppys either. The HP rep told me that the configuration was corrupted and the system was not holding the NVRAM information because the battery was dead and that I needed to add an external battery, make the jumper changes, and then use the System Configuration Maintenance Switch #6 on the System board at bootup after that to force the clearing of NVRAM. He said that the CD and floppy drives weren't recognized due to the corrupted information. He then told me that there was no more help without paying the fee, but that it should work fine after doing the previous steps. I unplugged the server for several days at this time.

I purchased and put in an external battery, made the jumper change and booted the server. HP support documents tell me that I'm supposed to see a system warning message before the Compaq System Configuration logo screen. It does not appear. I see the memory check and the processor checks then I get the same two messages as above and it hangs. I still can't boot from either the CD or the floppy drives. I've retried several times reseting the switch and even checked to make sure the battery had the right voltage.

Nothing was removed or changed other than that mentioned above. The server was working fine before that, it just didn't recognize the second processor in the Windows 2000 enviornment. All cables have been checked. I was told that I could press one of the "F" keys at post and enter a BIOS setup (Not through SmartStart), but I haven't been able to find it. I still don't know exactly where to look to change the setting to "Full Table Map" and if there is a BIOS other than the System Configuration Utility, then I don't know how to access it. I see spot references to things but not enough information to know exactly how to access them.

Any help would be appreciated.

first off need to know if you have the BIOS partition which smartstart puts on the HDDs during a install. If so has soon as you get the F10 for setup hit F10. You will get a screen that informs about the F10 and some other verbege. Has soon has you hit "any key to continue" press and hold down the "A" key until you see a screen that states that you are in advance mode. There you will hit config, then Hardware setup and it will load up some files. Then select view and edit details. In this list error down to the CPU and select Full table map.

It has been about a year and half since I support this, but I think the process is correct.

Thanks for answering sandav, I just about gave up looking to see if anyone would answer after 4 months.

No, the F10 partition is not there. What next?
