I have this 'problem' with Windows XP Pro.
User 'Dennis' is an administrator on a local machine.
This user is the only user that has rights to install programs on the machine.

I installed Office 2000 as user 'Dennis'. No problem there. All other (restricted) users can use Office 2000.
So for so good. I installed Winamp3 and K-Lite as 'Dennis'.

Winamp3 and K-Lite cannot be accessed by other restricted users. I noticed that no Shortcut or Program Folder appeared in C://Documents and Settings/All Users/Start Menu for these 2 programs.

When I login as a restricted user and go to:
C://Program Files/Kazaa Lite, I get en error message when trying to open 'kazaa.exe'.

What permissions or Group Policies do I need to set to get the restricted users to access the programs installed by Users with Administrative rights?

If you are part of a Win2k domain, the problem lies in the Domain permission set and not that of the local machine.

Assuming this is a non-Domain setting is that the problem lies in the NTFS permissions for the \Program File directory and subs. Try placing the restricted group under the Security Tab of the Subdirectory.

You will need to figure out what permissions to the file system a restricted user will need to run a certain program.

For example KaZaA Lite default directory is C:\Program Files\KaZaA Lite

When a machine is joined to a domain. Domain Users group is automatically added to the local computer's Users group and Domain Admins group is added to the local computer's Administrators group.

I think local computer's Users group has Read permission to C:\Program Files when Dennis installs KaZaA Lite this folder and all subfolders inherits the Read permission. Most apps will only create Start Menu Program folders and shortcuts for the user who is installing the application. Simply have Dennis copy the Start Menu folder to All Users profile.

Back to KaZaA Lite. Possibly KaZaA.Exe erroring on trying to validate the folder where it is going to store your downloads. C:\Program Files\KaZaA Lite\My Shared Folder you may need to give Modify access to this folder and maybe others like db as well.

Locking down workstations and figuring out access is going to be a chore but it's worth it.
