Programs disappearing after install.

I have had microsoft office 97 on my Windows XP system since I purchased the computer about a year ago. All of a sudden my word program is gone and when I click on the startup item it points to microsofts access and winword.exe has been removed from my system. I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it several times with the same result. I have just today downloaded from the net 5 programs to check for a virus. In each case I downloaded the software and went to install it. In each case it started to install then the install icon and the program just disappears and is no where to be found on my system. I click on start, search and enter the program name and it is not on my system.
