I even deleted the profile on the server and did a FIND on the local machine. The real problem started with a brand new Win98SE machine trying to run Word2k, it gave me an error about Windows installers-please reinstall. When I blew away the profile and logged on w/o a profile, Word opened fine. When I kill the profile and Windows asks if you want to recreate the profile, if I say yes I can't open Word. The profile was originally created on a Win95b machine running Word95. I guess I have to recreate the original profile and start fresh. How? I don't care, if someone can help me out...

I maintain the school computers at my local high school and there we have an NT server. For whatever reason it always asks you to create a profile if you have not already created one on the computer when you log on to the server. This causes many problems when the students say yes including not being able to use the office 2000 programs. What I suggest you do is delete all profiles and install the software again on the default profile(essentially not a profile at all) and then always say no to creating a profile if you can. I hope this helps if not you can email me at matchu_14@hotmail.com with any further questions.
At the highschool i used to attended(i've been thru 4 of them as was the network admin of one of them during my junior year), they always say chose no when you log in, so that it doesnt save your settings (thing is, these computers are publicaly acesibile, so you get like 400 students loging in all the time, and possibly trying to change the wallpaper, and what you end up with is a full HDD), in any case, they had probs just cuz some1 created a new profile, even tho foolproof or some other security prog was running, it was hard for some of he average on shift student matainese to fix it, least i was happier in that school just knowing not to do that, than when i was in the school that had over 40 PowerMacs i had to help people use, and had to do daily laser printer unjamming(and try installing over 50 ethernet cards into teachers Mac laptops, betcha its fun, not)
Karl
kb244@bellsouth.net
<a href=
Thanxs, but I really need to keep some sort of profile. Also, remember that after the profile is deleted, the Word2k works fine. I don't think that there is any reason to reinstall. Please keep me in mind. I will post any answers.

having the same problem??

Word2k didn't work so I told the teacher to delete all the profiles on the machine. One profile keeps coming back, no matter what I do to delete it. I booted to a command prompt and deleted the directory, and the darn thing is back when I reboot into Win98SE.

I have tried separately deleting all the folders in the directory. I get an error message saying you can't delete these, they're system files. But if I log on as any other user and save that user's profile, I can delete the problem user's profile. For a while. Then it comes back. And, no, I don't ask it to be re-created.

Is there any resolution? or is this "Microsoft strikes again" ??

Nothing on MS site, of course. JL Filler,Wilton Public Schools, Wilton CT

Do a search in the registry for:
DisableMSI

Also found this out. If there is a user trying to use Office2000 and it says it's not installed, copy the "Application Data" folder from another user (a working one!) Seems to make the Office2000 start problem go away. JL Filler,Wilton Public Schools, Wilton CT

Unless you really need profiles enabled i would suggest disabling them. especially on machines in labs. In 98 it is under the password section, in the control panel, all users use the same desktop/ startmenu. This will have the consequence that staff will not get customised windows, but will solve problems with students.
