The celeron chip (Made by Intel) is a PIII chip that only uses half of the on-chip Cache (usually 128kb). This isn't quite technically accurate, but it is a good enough explanation to let you know what you are looking at.
The Duron is AMD's version of a celeron. For the AMD line, either a Thunderbird or Athlon chip (same chip different name) are the equivelent of PIII. The Athlon XP chip is the equiv. of the P4. In most tests the AMD outperforms the Intel chips. If you are upgrading or buying a new pc, that is a worhtwhile consideration.
There is a marked difference between celeron & PIII performance. I have just upgraded to an AMD Athlon XP1800, but I demanded to view a benchmark test with an equivalent P4 machine first. The AMD beat the Pentium in all areas.
Pentium and Celeron chips run right off the same manufacturing line ... yep, side by side ... however Celeron chips are mere Pentiums that didn't pass the complete Quality assurance demands ... thus some of the processor features are disabled and it's speed rating reduced. The same applies to AMD's version, the Duron.
These chips are offered as a cheaper, low-end solution ... while they run well under business applications ... graphic demands can be more of a burdon.
AMD has surpassed the Pentium in the largest amount of benchmarks due to there branch prediction capabilities.
WRONG - on the Duron.
They are PHYSICALLY different. I have some right here,
and they are NOT the same as an Athlon. That means they are designed and built differently from inception.

same question, you'll get 12 different answers." Jake
The pin arrays vary from design and will continue to do so. in that part you are correct, 'the physical design is different' but the transistors, the core of the processors are constructed from the very same silicon wafers.
The external appearence does not change their internal construction.
I believe I have links to verify this information, if I can find them I'll post them.
and right you are ... there is no one correct answer ... only a path to a solution B-)
