Hi everyone,

I've just installed a brand new Server 2003 Standard edition, installed IIS, ZoneAlarm firewall, and SMTP on it. Right off the bat:

1. Can't browse Microsoft Network (inaccessible error) even though Client for MS Networks is installed on the NIC.

2. Only computers specifically added to my ZoneAlarm filewall can log on to the website in IIS. But I have IUSR (Internet User account) in permissions on the folder containing my web site, etc. Shouldn't everyone have access to the site?

Thanks for the thoughts

I'm guessing that Windows 2003 server doesn't like other firewalls. What exactly do you want to protect on the server? And from what?

If you want to protect it from the Net, get a separate box for your own firewall. I use a Linux-based distribution from Mandrake, Mandrake Multi Network Firewall. You can get an old PC for this. Ours is running on a 450 MHz CPU with 128 MB. If you have a small network, Coyote Linux is a floppy-based firewall that might be enough.

For Windows machines, I am definitely partial to Black Ice.

Good luck.

I wouldnt run Zone Alarm on 2k3 server its not designed for it. As bfks3230 said use something else as your firewall, would recommend something hardware based.

yes, I will get a hardware firewall, but until then I thought I should put something else on it.

So I understand that you're saying for now it's better jsut to have FW that comes with 2003? Until I get the Black Ice, that is?

BlackIce is not a server based firewall its for a desktop O/S.
