Hello All,

I am having e-mail issues. I do not think that it is e-mail client related. When I go to do a "Send/Receive" in Microsoft Outlook, I receive a mail error, which informs me that the POP3 mail server cannot be located, then it has a box that lists the mail server as mail.companyname.

This is the puzzling thing. Everyone else in my comapny can receive e-mail. I can also see the network drives, so that means that I am networked; just cannot use any e-mail client program (we also tried to use Eudora with the same result) or use the Internet.

But wait, the plot thickens...
Yes, I can't use the Internet BUT if I type type the IP address, I can view the site. For example, if I type in the IP address of google, the site appears. However, if I type in the domain name ( I receive a "page cannot be found error."

I think that the mail issue is tied to the Internet issue (both went down at the same time). Right now, I am using another workstation but would like to fix mine.

BACKGROUND: A few weeks back, my Norton e-mail tracker alerted me that a virus was being sent to me. Well, the program deleted the virus (Klez_H) but somehow the message stil apeared in my Inbox. So I deleted it as well.

I don't know if this issue is virus related but it very well may be.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

Check your LAN settings. See if you got the correct DNS servers listed. You may also want to check if you are set to use NETbios.

Thanks for the tip joegz. I don't understand this part though:

"You may also want to check if you are set to use NETbios."

What does NETbios do?

Thanks.

Here is a definition of Netbios

I probably should have just said check your WINS settings. (Hindsight)

Where you will find the setting depends on the OS. But typically you will find this option under your WINS settings.

For example under W2K go to "Network and Dialup connections" locate your LAN setting, right mouse click and select properties. Select Internet Protocol and click PROPERTIES. Select ADVANCED and then the WINS tab. There you can see what Netbios is set at. Typcially on a network the preferred option is use Netbios settings from the DHCP server but that setting will really depend on how the network is setup.

I guess the best way to check is check the IP settings on a machine that doesn't have the same problem as your machine displays.
