Hi All

Hope you can help. I have a network problem conecting the switches together.

Here it is. I am connecting two switches through a les 100 mb link. One switch is a L2 swich and the other is a L3 switch. I have trunked them together using 8021q via ports on each switch. I am unable to ping the diferent networks on each side. This is how it looks like.

network1---switch1(L2)----les 100mb ----switch2----network2.

any ideas please.

thanks

I assume the link is up between the 2 switches? Check with 'show cdp neighbors'. If they are and the trunk is up then make sure you can ping from the Layer-3 switch to the remote switch. If you can then try an extended ping from the Layer-3 switch to the remote layer-2 switch specifying the source interface to be the VLAN used at the layer-3 site.

It sounds like this is probably a simple routing issue; default gateways etc. Its probably worth drawing out the network with the IP networks/subnets detailed and trying to understand the paths packets will take, bear in mind the forward and reverse paths of the packets.

If you post the relevent bits of the configs (i.e. the trunk config on either side plus the VLAN interfaces from the Layer-3 switch and also the routing table)

Good luck

Andy

You must make sure that both sides of the trunk are set exactly the same when using dot1q encapsulation.

If either side is not set EXACTLY the same then the trunk will not work.

Make sure you have 'ip routing' enabled on the L3 switch, it is most likely off by default. what type of switch is it?
