Problems with .ico files...Please help...

For some reasons, all the icons associated with .ico files in my system were replaced with the same file icon ! Before, each icon file was preceded by the actual icon when it was listed in a folder by Window explorer . Please advise how to get back to the original conditions for .ico files. ( My system : Win98 SE, Celeron 466 Mhz, 448 RAM ).

It sounds like you have installed a new Graphics progam which has possibly done an end run in the registry. If this is the case, have a look at your gifs and jpegs etc. Do they all have this Icon too? I had this happen to me too.
Post back with the name of the program you installed please. Go to the registry and have a look at
this key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ico
Look in the right pane at the Default Value. What does it say?

Here's the default Icon registry file.

Copy the bold to Notepad. Name it Icon.reg Double click to enter into the registry.

I could not pinpoint which programs as I test a lot of new softwares each day !

Have a look here :
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\icofile\DefaultIcon]
@="%1"
Be sure the default Icon default value is %1
If it isn't retype it without the Quotation marks.
Reboot for the change to take effect.
