Ok, first thing first. Is the Cisco registry part of IOS or does it extend beyond that? Is it part of the boot loader? I have a couple of questions first off there for my own knowledge. I’m not an expert with IOS, but I manage to get around. I’ve obtained this switch, model ws-c2924c-xl-en. It was a purchase from 2 years ago. I found it in a box collecting dust. I remember it not working, but I couldn’t remember why. So I fired it up and found out. It won’t boot, and gets stuck in a loop. It boots and reboots and never stops. I’ve formatted the flash and loaded a fresh .bin image. The thing passes all the POST tests, but it keeps rebooting. The stack dump might as well be Chinese to me. I herd that there are final boot parameters in the Cisco registry, that’s why I ask if it’s part of the image or not. I’ve provided the output in at the bottom. One line that does interest me right after the POST, it is...

molecule_send() returns 4

Now what the hell does that mean? I’ve plugged it into many search engines far and wide and nothing has come up. Not a damn thing. So I’m really at a loss. I’m wondering if I should throw this switch away or not.

My real question is how does Cisco go about a full factory reset? I guess that’s something we’ll never know.

Thanks for lookin’
Mikey

If you can get into it I would make sure the conf register is correct , for this switch it should read 0xf , if not change it and try rebooting .

Unfortunate I cannot get into the registry. That's why I was asking if it was part of the OS or not. Because if it is then it really doesn't matter now does it? (c: Still, I want to know how cisco would refurb this stuff. I'm sure they ran in to this problem all the time.

Hi,

Ive had the same error messages not 4 days ago on a 2924M-Xl-EN

I found that one of the module cards was not correctly seated. Dont know how as it has been up and working for nearly 2 years!!

I removed the module and reseated it.

All works fine now.

No cards on this device. If you look up the model number you'll see it is a 24 port device without expantion bays. So, no cards on my device to reseed. (c: Thanks for the idea anyway...still havent gotten a hit on the return 4 error and i've been searching for days now. It's starting to look like this forum cant help me either.
