I have a Compaq Presario S4500NX. I bought memory for it the other day, and when i went to install it i realized i bought the wrong size. the only thing i removed was my two memory sticks which i then plugged back in. but for some reason, after i reconnected my computer it would not start. the power works, i can see it light up, the cd/dvd drives will open and close, but the system itself will not start up.

any ideas?

Starting guess is that you had to work to get access to the memory sockets and in the process wiggled an IDE header loose from the motherboard or the back of a drive.

like ed said, check ide connections. then remove both ram chips. put one back in and try to start. if it works, or doesn't, do the same with second RAM. do you get a beep error code?

Does the monitor display anything at all? Compaq logo? POST screen? Tried booting off a floppy drive?

It sounds like you just need to reseat everything, paying particular attention to the graphics card (if it has one) the memory modules (completely pushed home, the main power plug (remove and refit.
If all else fails try resetting the bios (jumpers)

I suppose there is an outside chance that the power supply has failed (coincidentlty at the same time)
