problems logging of the internet

When I log off the Internet the network connections icon just stays there and doesnt let me log off until I shut down the computer. What can I do to solve this problem?

Check to see if you have "dial whenever a network connection is not present" selected under Tools/Internet Options/Connections if your using IE.
