I have a W2K Server (SP2) and a laptop running W2K Pro (sp3).
I have a 350MB file on a Server disk, which is shared across the LAN. When I try to copy the file to my laptop, I get the message Cannot copy filename.ext: The specified network name is no longer available. after about a third of the file is copied.
When I try the same copy from a W98 client it works. What the heck is going on?

Regards - Phil.

hi,
check if there are network problem:

go at server and enter some pings

ping host1
ping host2

ping -l 320 host1
ping -l 320 host2

ping -l 3200 host1
ping -l 3200 host2

and see if you see any diff between h1 and h2.

bye

OK, I pinged the laptop and 2 w98 workstations, with the same results. 0ms turnround, no packets lost.

Try enabling netbios over ip under network properties advanced tab of ip settings.

Well, dentarthurdent the server was already configured as you suggested. I changed the laptop, rebooted & tried the copy again with the same failure.

Thanks.

Now here's curious...
I copied the file to a w98 machine and then copied it to my laptop from there - without any problems.

Always know where your towel is.

This sounds like a network browsing problem to me. Do you have a wins server setup ? Or DNS ?
The other thing it reminds me of is a problem I heard of with W2k sp2 that causes problems with file transfer to W98 clients. But that appears to be the opposite of your problem.
It might be worth upgrading the server to sp3 if that's feasible.

Cheers,

Will.

I had this problem once and it turned out to be a bad nic. If you have an extra nic try swapping it out.

I have DNS & WINS on the server.

I have any number of spare NICs, unfortunately the NIC in the laptop is a PCMCIA card & I don't have a spare one of those. I may be able to borrow one from a friend though.

Thanks - Phil.

I am having the same problem was this ever resolved? toms@servitechlabs.com

tsteer, can you give details on your problem, if it's a single pc with the problem etc...
If it is exactly the same as the above, I would try swaping hardware. Nic, Hub/Switch, or even try a different port on the Hub/Switch.

tsteer: It seems to be a hardware problem. I have a dodgy disk in my laptop and the hub I was using has failed.

Well, I'm having a same problem. I've one Win2k Adv. Server with about 40 Win2k Pro clients. I've changed the NIC and cable, and we got a brand new D-Link 100BaseT switch. Same problem occur. WHY!?!?!?

I have the same problem, Windows 2000 server and 1 XP SP1 workstation (home setup). I replace both NICs in both computers. I have a switch, but I connected them directly with a crossover cable. I also tried everything mentioned above, all with no prevail.

Has anyone came to a solution for this most annoying problem?

TIA.

This Sounds Different, but when i had the same problem, this way i could resolve.

Can u check the IRQ Used bye the NIC, and check is it shared. if shared. try to change the (PCMCIA)/(PCI)slot of the NIC, which automatically changes the IRQ. Some time's due to the IRQ sharing (Not Conflict) also the Network card behave's randomly.

Let me know What is the result
Hope this would help u.
