Hi all,
Totally new here and new to Cisco... I have just acquired a 2503 router and have connected the blue console cable into the console port on the router and the other end into my ethernet port on my pc. I'm now trying to access the router with Hyperterminal. I haven't connected anything else to the router at all (apart from the power cable obviously) - I've followed the guide on this page: and I've clicked on the little Hyperterminal icon but when HT starts it gives me a message about another program using the telephony device. I then tried using COM1 with 9600 8 N 1 as the settings but it just comes up blank... Can anyone help?? Could it possibly be that I need to get an adaptor to plug the cable into my Serial port and not my ethernet port??
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need a console cable with a db9 on the end that goes to the pc which has to go into the "serial" port of the laptop or pc , you cannot attach to the router thru the ethernet port on your pc . The best thing to do is to go to radio shack and get a rj45to db9 connector and also get a db9 null modem adaptor to go with it , this with a straight thru cable will get you into any piece of cisco equipment.

Great... many thanks for that..... Hopefully I'll be off flying now... Thanks again. May be back sause I'm a bit thick at all this stuff
