I have just reinstalled windows XP and have all the hardware drivered and all the available updates and service packs from microsoft. The problem is when I am connected to the internet for programs theat require a connection, windows shuts down (but not the computer). It is like the monitor is on standby but if i press any key or move the mouse there is no reaction. Yhe only way of getting windows back is by pressing the reset button on my tower. Is this a crash of some sort or is windows still running in the background. The first time I saw this, I restarted my computer and got a message saying it was my graphics card that could have caused the problem. I have tried 3 different drivers (1 from microsoft, 1 from nVidia) and I still get the same problem only now I no longer get an error message. This happens every time even if I format my hard drive and do a clean install. This is getting very frustrating because i can't leave my computer unattended downloading. Is there anyone who knows how to sort this problem

Some very basic troubleshooting has to be done here(apologies if it has already been done):
In control panel, power options check the power schemes and settings and the advanced/hibernate options.
Just ensure that it doesnt power off for any reason or switch hardware off.
Also right click my computer, manage, services, disable nvidia helper if it is there.
Let me know how all that goes.....

Could have an IRQ conflict. check in the device manager for any yellow symbols.

Check to see if you have the correct USB and Network card drivers, depending which your modem is attached to. Also update bios/drivers of modem/router

Any thing listed in the event viewer which might explain the last unexpected shut down?

I have sorted my problem out thanks. I changed a few PCI cards around as there were no yellow symbols. Had one major system restart earlier but it's staying on now with no problems.
I moved an exhaust and i think that's what was causing the problems but it's all sorted now
Anyway thanks for your advice

Hello again. My computer was running fine and then blu screened and restarted. It now will only boot into safe mode even though i selected last known good configuration.
Is there any way I can restore my desktop back the way it was without having to reinstall windows?

You need the XP install CD:

use the driver roll option, in future use the system restore to use last backup. can't remember where the option is but if you get stuck I'll find out.

I got out of the BLUE screen (due to virus) similar to what you described. Here is how I fixed the problem. I logged in as Administrator using SAFE mode. Then went into the computer / network name and changed it. Since the problem appeard to be network related (as yours). This allowed me to get get back online and download SP1 and other critical fixes. Upon reboot from the Windows updates all was well again. Hope this helps...
