Problem with Xlink288E modem and hyperterminal

I need to setup an xlink288E modem to answer calls and this is done using hyperterminal according to the instructions. I connect it to a PC (tried win 95,98,2000,nt)and setup hyperterminal to 9600bps 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit and no flow control. I know I am getting the right com port as a light lights up and disappears when I connect and disconnect respectively. I do not seem to be getting any output on the screen whatever I type AT etc

If Hayes command set (manual should tell you) then try ate1q0 to set up echo and turn off quiet mode. You may need to set S0=1 for autoanswer on first ring. Write the registry to save it.

I cannot even get an error or ok out of the modem. Have you any tips on how hyperterminal should be set up? Is the setup in my previous post correct ?

Other than slow, OK as far as I can tell, should talk at up to 28.8 in all likelyhood.
What does device mangler tell you about your modem? Working OK?
YOu can also force the issue with HT, tell it you want to connect directly to the comm port, which should allow you to blast the modem directly. Otherwise you are going through window's connection to the modem. Think you should get two lites when you connect, CD(or CS) and TR, and maybe an auto answer lite if auto answer is set up in the modem.
