Help...

Something is wrong with my system now. I can not access any files using win explorer or my computer. For example. If I click on an item on my desk top or try to access anything through my computer, my system freezes. I can kill the process with atrl-alt-del, but each time I try, it freezes.

Any suggestions for a fix?

Thanks!

Did you install any hardware or software immediately before the problem started?
Which O/S are you using?

Also, do you have an antivirus program, and if so can you access the Internet to update its files, and then run it?
And do you have Ad-aware, Spybot, and CWShredder, and can you run them(or D/L them from the Internet)?

I do not recall installing anything. It started happening Friday. IN fact, I know I didn't install anything. started Friday afternoon shortly before I left work. I thought I just needed to reboot. Machine is using Win98

I've Ad Aware and Spybot. Spybot found nothing. Adware removed a bunch of stuff. I will try to find cwshredder and run that.

Ad-aware, Spybot, and CWShredder do not scan for viruses, which is another likely cause. As ski asked, do you have an antivirus scanner that's up-to-date? If so, do a full system scan.

Here's a website that has some tutorials on some of the software listed here:

Yes, I have Sophos Anti virus on this machine. I'll check for updates here also. IF this does not work, is it possible to reinstall the os without damaging the files I currently have on the machine. It seems that the only problem I am having is with explorer/my computer. I can access files within the application, but can not move, delete, explore etc...

Go to Add Remove in control panel and select Internet explorer click remove. It will not remove but it will show a box with 3 options. Remove, repair, and Restore previous configuration.
Choose Repair.
Follow the instructions given.
Good luck!

Runas,

I'm having trouble with Windows Explorer. I don't see this option in the control panel

Yes, you should be able to re-install Windows on top of itself and retain all your programs and data. The re-install will just replace corrupted or missing system files.

However, it's always a good precautionary measure to back anything important up (or just make a complete image of the drive) before you do it. Also don't forget to run that complete virus scan first.

Good Luck!
