When i try and play a game on my computer, it exits the game and goes right back to windows with no error message. It seems like there is a program kicking me out of games. When i tried to install Red Alert, right when i click install it jumps right back to windows and closes Red Alert. What is going on??

You are talking about your home PC right ?
Are you sure your mothorboard chipset supports the version of DirectX you are currently using ?
Your problem seems very similar to one I had when I purchased Commandos 2. I had an AMD XP 1600+ at that time, I was sure I had enough horsepower to run the game. Except that I never got the game started. My PC would freeze and I had to use the reset button.
I found out rather quickly that, although the game had installed DX8, my chipset was not DX8-compatible.
So I had to change the mainboard, since there was no BIOS update available for the chipset.
I would check which games are working and which are not. Then trace that to the highest DX version that is used by the games that work.
If it is not DirectX that is the problem, then you may have to check which other programs are running in the background and why. You'll probably have to manually try each one to find out if one of them is blocking your gaming experience.
Oh, by the way, anti-virus products are not very game friendly, so you might want to disable it if you have one running.

Pascal.

sounds like a graphics card driver problem to me had a similar problem with return to castle wolfenstein. start the game and it kicked me out. If you haven't done so already i would advise updateing your graphics card drivers if there are any newer ones

i have the most updated driver for my video card.
If it was a directx issue, could i download an older direct-x an install it?

You can most probably find old DX versions on the web. Try Tucows or Download.com.
Unfortunately, to my knowledge, it is impossible to install an older version of DX over an existing one.
The DX setup checks what version is installed and, if the system is up to date or already better, it aborts.
Therefore, you would have to entirely remove DX before installing a new version.
I have never uninstalled DX, I do not know if it is possible.
What is sure to work is backing up your data and formatting the system, then installing Windows all over again.
Once Windows is installed, you can then install the DX version you want, then the video drivers you want, then the games you want to test.
You'll just have to work upwards and not install any game that needs a DX higher than what you have installed.

Ok Red Alert is a bit old and may be that's the cause!

Check the publishers web site to see if there is a any patches etc.

I know thet GTA3 had similar problems if anything was plugged into the serial ports (don't ask me why) and removing the connectors the game would be OK.

There is a free program called "DirectX Buster" that will let you uninstall your current DX, if you like. You can find it guru3d.com or majorgeeks.com
