I accidentally sent a aol.exec file to the recycle bin and deleted it. Now I can't defragment my c: drive and the help spot comes up when my computer starts. I am also having problems with my CD burner. Is there anything I can do?

You could just reload windows98 over the top of the original windows
Doing this you will not lose any data and it will fix any problems you might have "If they are windows related"
WARNINGS
Make a directory on your c drive called win98
put the cd in and copy win98 to the c:\win98 directory you just created.
Restart in dos goto c:\win98 and type setup

You are asked to pick a directory to install to make sure it is c:/windows NOT c:/windows.000

You may get a SU error
When the program tells you that you can't install this way (i.e., you get the "SU0168" error), press the RESET button to reboot the PC.
You will be confronted with a safe set up screen,at which point it will ask you to press any button.
Press CTRL and C and answer Y to the question
Go to c:\windows and rename win.com win.old (ren win.com win.old)
Go to the C:WININST0.400 directory.
Edit the file C:WININST0.400SETUPP.INF
There is a line:
ProductType = number; change the number to 2.
Save and exit
Go back to c:\win98 and type setup again
If done right you will not get the error msg this time.

GOOD LUCK

Reloading Windows on top of itself will only ensure that basic system files are loaded if missing. This will not correct corrupted registry settings.

Just an FYI...

I will correct Windows Regisrty settings just not Added programmes registry setting.
As far as your CD burner have you tried re loading Easy cd creater or what ever you are using.

If you wish to fix a corrupt registry due to a programme that has been installed lately you could always use
SCANREG and go back a few days or even weeks.

Reinstall AOL may fix it. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

;-) Not to seem overly simplistic, but from your question it sounds as if the America Online executable was deleted. The easiest fix would be to reinstall AOL. If you dont want AOL. Reinstall - let it fix for AOL, what reinstalling 98 would do for 98 - then use the uninsatll option to uninstall it. It should replace any missing files but not corrupt what is already there.

If reinstalling your CD writer software OR trying a different software app does not fix your CD woes then try a different blank cd. CDR \ CDRW disks come in various levels of (basically) reliability. If I am not mistaken the Blue bottom ones are the cheapest - Gold next best and Silver\platinum = VERY BEST. You can see this reflected in cost. I use blue bottom ones daily for data and music cd's that I play in my car but I do noice more problems with them than I did any other.

Agree with jdrake. Yea, re-install Windows if you want AOL version 3 or simething like that. And if you upgraded Internet Explorer, DirectX, or Windows Meduia Player, you're in for a WHOLE lot more trouble.

Do you use AOL?
Was the file name waol.exe?
What is "the helpspot"?
