I just bought a computer and installed windows 98 on it. The computer only has one cd-writer in it,
but for some reason I cannot get the cd-writer to be recognized when I install the software for the
cd-writer. It works fine as a drive, but it will work or be detected as a cd-writer. I was checking
some system tools and found these errors under "System Information". I don't know if it has to do with
the problem I'm having, but please take a look at them below and let me know what I can do.

Thank you in advance!!

A bit more info would be nice, but here goes, I take it it is and IDE device ?And that it is the only CD rom drive you have ?,
Have you Set it on IDE 1 or 2,
I would recomend that You have it on IDE 2 set to master on the jumpers and the hard drive on IDE 1 set to master.
In my computer do you see the device as a cd ? Set the properties to have DMA enabled.
Also In device manager, (right click) my computer on desktop and click properties, check for any ! yellow marks ?
Windows by defualt has drivers installed for the cdrom, ie the standard oak tree drivers should run the device, The actual "writing" program is what controlls the device in trems of writing disks, ie easy cd, Nero, Win cd etc.
Post back with ide settings mboard .

I don't know if the cd writer is on ide 1 or 2, how do I check for it?

I will check the other devices as well, thank you for your help. I will let you know how it goes.

Also, the cd writer is the only cd rom drive I have. It's inside the computer, it's not external.

Thank you.

I take it the new computer had the CD writer installed when you bought it?
If so, you should really get it fixed under warranty, as opening the case may be detected by the system and invalidate any warranty you may have, which of course, is bad.....
Let us know if this is/isn't the case and we'll go from there.
Regards, Andy. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

The cd-writer was in fact already installed. Unfortunately, I have already opened the case to install an ethernet card. Is the computer still on warranty now?

Thank you.

If you have any anti virus software running in background end the task before installing. Some drivers will not install properly unless you disable the virus software. I just ran into this problem with video card drivers.

To hchman:

Just need to clear up what you said. What do you mean by installing? What are you referring to? The CD-writer is already installed.

Thanks

This is what you said in your first entry. "I cannot get the cd-writer to be recognized when I install the software for the cd-writer." Try to reinstall the drivers. There is a possibility that the drivers did not install properly. Do you have anti virus running in background? My only point was to make sure you did not have any anti virus running in background.

My mistake, I should've remembered what I said.

I do have an anti-virus in the background. It's Norton.

Should I disable it, or uninstall it?

How about any conflicts? I check out the conflict/sharing section under "system information". Could there be any conflicts between devices?

Thank you!!!

to clarify,
Your ide connection are to 80 pins long thin conectors
marked ide 1 and ide 2 on some mother boards they are right next to the floppy connector.
They are connected via ribon cables, usually grey.

LIke hotfusion said however you should have took it back, but since you will have broke a "SEAL" your warrenty is prbably invaled, the seal is usually a piece of sticky across a screw or edge joint of the case, which says if broke invalid !
So where do we go, I would say it is not down to Norton running in the backround as Norton only looks at Boot sector activity when it comes to software installs on the driver installation, I would tend to point in hardware direction, Can u press either DEL or f* when the system boots and check your bios ? under standerd cmos setup ?
post back, puzzled?

I have no reason for why it is working now, but it is. I had a couple of trial versions of burning programs and they couldn't recognize the burner, but then one of those programs seemed to work. I tried to burn a cd and it worked. I am confused, but I'm not totally happy as my computer still has a glitch. I noticed that some of the programs, such as windows explorer, seem to malfunction. At one time all the letter in windows explorer seemed to grow and get bigger. Is there a file that control that, such as a dll?

Thank you everyone for helping me out.

If I need to start a new thread, please let me know and I will create a new one.

Totally confused,
cpalacios
