We have tapes that won't stay available. The only option I know of if we can't make them avaiable and we can't move data from them they are considered bad and should be replaced. But that would mean we lost any data on those tapes. But since we can't access them anyway they may already be lost to us. Is this a true statement? Is there anything I can do to get the data off the tapes or force then to stay available? Ideas anyone???? running tsm 5.2.3.1.

Sorry - I have to ask... The tapes ARE in the library right?

I use LTO so not sure if the same thing applies... Is volume being checked in alright? I mean, are the labels being read correctly?

Yes they are in the library and yes they are checked in ok. I put them to readwrite and they go back to unavailable. I can't move the data off those tapes to new ones.

Hmm.. is there anything in the actlog? If you changed to r/w yesterday does 'q act begind=-1 se=YOUR_VOL_SER' show you anything? Can you post it?

01/30/07 09:01:10 ANR8381E 3592 volume RP0211 could not be mounted in drive JAG01 (/dev/rmt0). (SESSION: 15849)
01/30/07 09:01:10 ANR1402W Mount request denied for volume RP0211 - volume unavailable. (SESSION: 15849)
01/30/07 09:01:10 ANR1410W Access mode for volume RP0211 now set to "unavailable". (SESSION: 15849)

Does this help?

Ok.. thats gives us a point of reference... now can you "q actlog begind=01/30/2007 begint=08:00:00 endt=09:02:00" and post?

I think we should see some errors just before that first error.

Oh and what o/s is this?
