Hi there,

I have an application that is on every PC. I want to create a shortcut to this app and place it on a shared drive. I can create the shortcut and set the Target and "Start In" path to "C:\Program Files\Application". However, when I access this shortcut from another PC the Target and "Start In" paths point to "\\MyComputerName\C$\Program Files\Application"

I can't seem to force the shortcut to always point to "C:\Program Files\Application". Windows is trying to be too clever for it's own good! Any ideas how to get round this?

Thanks in advance.

Disable the Tracking of Broken Shortcuts

To prevent the NTFS file system from tracking alternate paths for a broken shortcut link, make the following changes in the registry:

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
2. Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
3. On the Edit menu, click New, and then click DWORD value.
4. Type NoResolveTrack for the Value name, and then press ENTER.
5. Double-click the new value, and then set it to 1.
6. Click OK.
7. Quit Registry Editor.

You can also prevent this behavior at a Group Policy level by selecting the Do not use the tracking-based method when resolving shell shortcuts check box in the following location:
User Configuration\AdministrativeTemplates\Start Menu and Taskbar group policy

No that didn't work. The problem is it can find the link to my PC so theoretically the link isn't actually broken. It still says "\\MyComputerName\c$\Program Files\Application"
