Hi hopefully somebody can give me a tip. We use roaming profiles in our company and we are going to use XP. Our problem is that we use Zenworks as a software distribution tool and when we logon for the first time as the user, there is no profile so a profile is created. The profile is then saved in the Home directory of the user and the software is then installed, but when we start the computer again, it doesn't find the profile in the home directory and creates another profile. Zenworks then installs the software again and then we have to start the computer again. The user already has main user rights, but I don't know what else I need to do. Help!!!

This is normal when using ZEN on any OS not just XP. The issue is not that it does not find the roaming profile but that the profile that is being delivered from the server is out of date and the user does not have rights to write back to the roaming profilewhen loggin out so the next time they login it reloads the profile.(probably a mandatory profile or rights have been taken away) Remember that the registry is part of the roaming profile as well!

What you need to do is use a clean machine to login to the network, update or install your programs and change all settings that you need to distribute to the users including opening all programs on the machine to register "first use" then write the profile back manually. NB ENSURE YOU SET THE GROUP "EVERYONE" ALLOWED TO USE THE PROFILE WHEN WRITING IT BACK OTHERWISE WHEN ANOTHER USER LOGS IN IT WILL PROMPT FOR A USER NAME AND PASSWORD OF THE MACHINE YOU WROTE THE PROFILE BACK WITH. P.S. There is a registry fix for that if you dont do it but it means applying to every machine in the network.

You also need to delete certain registry settings so the machine is "registered" on the ZEN database.
HKLM->SOFTWARE->NOVELL->WORKSTATION MANAGER->IDENTIFICATION.
Delete all ecept the default path and the exe path. restart the machine and the registry should update if you have ZEN registration working.

Have fun.
