i Have a problem with my computer.whenever i right click on any file anywhere except an .exe(as of now)
it takes a good minute for the right click pop up menu to show up, during that time the windows explorer's status
in the Task Manger is 'Not Responding' if i had right clicked a file in the windows explorer.
this doesn't happen in the windows explorer alone, even on my desktop. it happens everywhere.
and also double clicking to open any file also take a long time to open that file.
i need help to resolve this problem. its really annoying

I have restarted, i messed around a bit with the 'Context Menu Handlers' in the registry nothing seems to help.

yesterday i downloaded ShellExview, this shows all the context menu handlers, Microsofts and non microsofts as well. i have disabled all the non microsoft context menu handlers and still nothing helped
my s/m runs on a windows XP pro.
i desperately need help with this one. i have already spent almost 2 days and nothing has helped.

Have you checked the performance monitor in task manager? Which process is sucking up CPU utilization? Sounds like potential spyware, might want to try trend-micro or hijack this if you havn't ran them yet.

HI badfrog, i did check the perfomance in the Task Manger, the CPU utilization is normal.
Adware, Trend Micro, Microsoft Antispyware, HJT, tried everything. some of the antivirus software found some viruses, i got rid of them but nothing seems to help.

Hi bcastner, i've already gone through the info provided in the link. i don't have SP2 and i don't have any DIVx software installed.

. Stop the WIA service and test again
. Are you running GoBack? It causes a noticable delay
. Remove any faulty entries in the Send to... context menu
. Remove any entries in the context menu referring to software no longer installed
. Defragment the hard disk
. Optomize the registry. You can use NTREGOPT, freeware:
How absolutely certain are you that the workstation is clean of malware? Remember that Browser Helper Objects from the IE side of things have a direct effect on Explorer performance. See faq608-4650

i stopped the WIA service and tried no use.
I don't know what GoBack is but i don't think i have any software installed by that name.
As far as i know all the entries in the Send To are legit.
these are the Send To entires.
Compressed Folder
Desktop
Mail Recipient
MusicMatch Burner
RecordNow
MyDocuments
Register DLL
Un Register DLL
Floppy Drive
CD-RW Drive
i have disabled all the context Menu using the ShellExView.

I haven't Defragmented the Hard Disk.
and i haven't optimized the Registry.i'll try that.

Well your in good hands with Bill helping you now so I'll back out. Only other thing I can offer is make sure you run the spyware detection software in safe mode if you havn't already.

Cheers!

Hey Bill have you used that NTREGOPT very much? If so do you often see a performance increase afterwords or is it too minimal to notice?

I have a commercial product that does essentially what NTREGOPT does, but honestly I rarely run it. Perhpas twice a year or so.

sure i will bcastner. thanks for taking the initiative for helping me.
the problem is with my Computer at work. i'm at home right now.so i will do what you have said and post the HJT log tomorrow.

Try Safe Mode and see what your speed is like, and try another username in Normal Mode too.

If it improves look at drivers and processes that load in Normal Mode or a corrupt profile.

Update :
Bcastner, i disabled MusicMatch from msconfig but still the MM option showed up in the SendTo menu.and in the AutoRuns utility there was no MM entry. so i just uninstalled MM and the menu option is now gone.
but no use. the problem persists.

and here's the HJT log.

and also here are few things i did and i noticed.
i remember installing a new font a while back. i uninstalled it.
and just so that you know this problem doesn't happen in the windows explorer alone. it even happens while right clicking a file in the desktop, basically anywhere.
not alone right click. even if i try to open the file by double clicking it it takes a long time.
but this doesn't happen with folders or .exe files.
i have disabled the transistion effect for the right click.
and one more thing that i noticed is that, the first time i right click on a file and after it takes its own sweet time for the pop to show up the first time, next 5 - 7 consecutive right clicks works fine !.
same thing happens when i open the explorer for the first time, it kinda freezes the very first time only and then its all fine.
hope with all the information that i can give you guys can help me out.

linney,
i'll go through the links that you have provided and see if that helps. thanks.

BTW i forgot to mention, i tried rebooting the s/m in 'safe mode' and 'last known good configuration' but nothing helped. and the s/m has almost 18Gb of free space.

OK guys, the problem is solved. yes you read it right all my problems with the Explorer and the right click and aleft click is resolved.
The issue was, the right lick pop up menu was referring to a menu item that was on a network, hence it was taking time to refer to that menu from the network. so all you gotta do is identify the menu item that is refered through the network and disable it.
to start with any one who has a similar problem just disable your Nic card and see if that resolves the issue. if it does go to this link and follow the steps as for me the menu was that of Nero software. long time back i installed Nero from one of my friends computer in the n/w and i think i uninstalled it too and the funny thing is there are no Nero menu item that shows up in the right click pop up menu.anyways glad that the issue is resolve.

thanks to everyone who have tried to help me.
