Hi,

This one has me stumped. I have a Vista Business PC which is running SP1 on a domain in a remote office. We use port 3390 to remote into it. Its been working for about a year. Yesterday we learned that we cannot remote into this Vista PC from anohter Vista PC, however we can from a comptuer running Windows XP. Basically Vista to Vista dosn't work, XP to Vista works. We can remote into other Vista comptuers on that network. The windows firewall is off, even though port 3390 is open on that computer.
The error message is:
"This computer can't connect to the remote comptuer.
Try connecting again. If the problem continues, contact the owner of the remote computer or your network administrator."

I have tried installing updates, restarting, disableing remote access, restating, enabling remote access, restarting terminal service serivces, disabling antivirus (avast), disabling network discovery. Yea...

The layout is.

Remote office:
Domain Controller
Vista Pc1 Port 3390
Vista Pc2 Port 3391
Vista Pc3 Port 3389

My Office
Vista PC1
Vista PC2
XP PC1

I am trying to remote from my office to vista pc1 at the remote office. It works on the XP Pc at my office but not from any of the Vista PC's at my office or the remote office. There is no VPN just normal internet between the office's. There are no other network or internet issues at either office, or any changes to the group poliy.

Anyone have any ideas?

Did you try System Restore on the Vista Business machine?

When you tested from other machines, was that just your username or different users that tried to connect?

Are there any clues in the Event Viewer, especially any Security logging?

Can the Vista Business machine remote connect from there to your machine? If not can that same Business machine connect remotely to you if it is run in "Safe Mode With Networking"? It wont work the other way around as the launching machine needs to be in Normal Mode but not the receiving machine.

Have you tried the System File Checker?
Some Windows Vista functions may not work, or Windows Vista may stop responding

Once a few months ago when I had a similar problem in that Remote Desktop just died, the only solution for me was a clean install, I hope you don't end up there.

Are you trying to connect to the remote system by name or ip address? Unfortunately, you get the same error message if the remote machine doesn't even exist. The fact that the local xp machine still works correctly, makes it seem likely that the problem is with the local vista machines. However "but not from any of the Vista PC's at my office or the remote office", if the remote machines can't connect to each other independant of you office, the problem is surely at that end.

Have you done the simple things like checking IP configs, DNS entries etc? Can you ping it by hostname and ip address?
Have you checked the Event logs on the remote pc?
Has the remote pc been restarted at all (sometimes if there have been updates applied to machines they cause spurious issues until rebooted).

The real world is not about exam scores, it's about ability.

Ok. I figured it out, thanks to our friends at chicagotech.net.

This is an issue with the authentication method of the Remote Desktop Connection 6 in windows Vista. For some reason it fails when it prompts you for your credentials prior to logging on. You can disable the extra security features by saving the remote desktop connection to your desktop then opening it in notepad. You will have to change the authentication level:i:1 line to
authentication level:i:0
and add
enablecredsspsupport:i:0
to the end of the file. Save it and you’re done.

Microsoft has this listed as an error for XP and Server 2k3 but not for Vista yet.......

That article is here:

I figured this out when I found this article:

One more thing.
When I attempted to connect from a Server 2003 pc to the Vista PC1 I got this error message. I am including it so the search engines will find it and hopefully solve someone else’s problem faster.

Remote Desktop Connection
An authentication error had occurred (Code: 0x207). Please contact your help desk for more information.
Remote computer: Vista PC1

Hope this helps someone else.
Cheers!!

PS. If you figure out a more permanent solution post it and I’ll try it out.

Thank you for your feedback.

Is what is mentioned in the last few posts of this thread anything similar?

Wow.. That thread has a wild RDP issue also. I don't think its related to the issue I was having though.
