Problem with Outlook Express updated

I've just updated Internet Explorer which of course, included OE. I can log on now but can't retirive or send mail. Also, I can't retrieve the twenty some messages that were there. had to do this due to a virus matter. Can I run IE 6 and OE 4 safely?
