For some reason, Microsoft Money will no longer recognize my data file or my back up. When I try to open the program, I get the following message.
'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money\Money' is corrupted or is not a money data file. Make sure you are opening a file with an MNY extension. If you have chosen the correct file and it could not be accessed, you will need to open your most recent backup file to access your data.
The file I'm trying to open is the correct file and I just used it the night before. Since using it, I've defrag my system. Also, I backed and compressed some files using Norton Cleansweep. I've since restored all these files just in case. One last thing I did was fast and safe cleanup using Norton to get rid of temp files, recycle, etc.

I tried the Microsoft website and found one file that might apply as a fix, but it is unavailable for download.

Any help would be appreciated.

Money 98: Opening or Restoring a Backup File with Long File Name (Q174130)

------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Money 98

-------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
When you try to open a file or restore a backup file you may receive the following error:

'<drive>:\<folder>\<file name>.mny' is corrupted or is not a Money data file. Make sure you are opening a file with an MNY extension. If you have chosen the correct file and it could not be accessed, you will need to reopen your most recent backup file to access your data.
If you click OK, you may receive another error message:
File Required: In order to start Money, you must have a valid Money file open. To open an existing Money file or to create a new Money file, click the Open File button. To restore a backup file, click the Restore backup button.

CAUSE
This problem will occur if the path and file name are more than 127 characters long.

RESOLUTION
Rename or move the file so the path and file name does not exceed 127 characters. You can use Windows Explorer to rename or move the file. To rename the file, follow these steps:

Click the Start button, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.

Open the folder where the file is located.

Click the file to select it.

On the File menu, click Rename.

Change the file name so the path and file name is less than 127 characters. Make sure you leave .mny as the extension.

You should now be able to open the file in Money.

For information on how to move a file in Windows refer to the "Moving a file or folder" topic in Windows online help.

MORE INFORMATION
Earlier versions of Money would notify you if a file name was too long before saving the file.

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
