Hi,
Installation of IIS on WIN XP Pro doesn't work. When I browse for " I get "HTTP 500 - Internal server error". Reinstalling of iis didn't help.
Please help!

I am having the same problem. I upgraded from Windows 98 to Window XP Professional and my IIS isn't working. The service does not open when I double click it.

Also, my world wide web publishing service says "starting" instead of started. Its like its waiting on something. I know its dependent on the IIS Admin, but its status is started.

I don't know what is wrong. I also have the .NET Framework installed on my pc. I cannot do any developing since IIS doesn't work.

Have you found out anything? Please help?

try browsing for: computer name - not localhost.

You should get a screen - site under construction - if you haven't made any pages yet.

Kim,

That did not work. I have tried that already. All I get with that is "The page cannot be displayed"

Anything else that you can think of?

First of all lets try and find out what the real problem is.
In IE go to Tools>Internet Options>Advanced and turn off "Show Friendly HTTP Errors" then try again and see if you get a more accurate error message.
Also check your drive to make sure that you have c:\inetpub\ and the files inside this directory.
Use the IIS snap-in from Administrative Tools and right click the Default web site - go to properties>documents - and make sure that the Enable Default Document box is checked and that you have one of the file names listed in the directory. Probably you will have iisstart.asp. If this all doesn't work and you can do it easily make a web page called default.htm or index.htm and copy it to the directory.

Let me know what happens!

I solved this problem!!!
Go to Tools, Internet Options, Connections tab, then the LAN Settings button at the bottom. If "Automatically detect settings" is checked, uncheck it then click OK and restart the browser. When it's checked, IE may go to your ISP to resolve localhost. Since the ISP doesn't have an entry for localhost the error is returned.

Kim,

When I tried your first request and then typed in I got this message "The system cannot find the file specified." Then I typed in the name my pc, and got "The page cannot be displayed" webpage.

I then opened a web browser and entered c:\inetpub\ And it opened it. But if I try to open an asp page I get a windows box that says Windows cannot open this file. It needs to know the program that created it.

I cannot get too the IIS Snap-In because from Administrative Tools, Internet Information Services does not open for me at all.

World Wide Web Publishing is still at a status of "Starting" not Started.....

My Automatically Detect Settings was not checked. So that is not it.

Any other thoughts guys?????

Elliot-

It sounds like your IIS is not correctly installed. I would totally remove it - and then install it again. I had the same problem with IIS when it was installed with the XP intall. However it worked fine after I re-installed it.

Did you also install Microsoft Loopback Adapter? You need to do this through add/remove hardware

Hi, I did all of your steps. but still the IIS is not working. I upgraded the win xp pro from win xp home edition. once I installed the IIS the localhost is not at all working, help me out regard this.
thanks, Kansul.

Hi Guys,

I resolved the Problem with IIS. Its working fine.

Seems while Installing the IIS in win xp pro, make sure the IIS service include the FTP service is enabled(i.e by default that could be disabled) then install the IIS. And recheck the three services of SMTP, FTP& Default web site is running in your m/c. If three services are running then you can enjoy with your IIS.

After the IIS installation also you can reinsatll the FTP service thru the WIN xp pro installation cd.

Let me know if you have any concerns

Thanks
Kansul
