Problem with CMS Backup

we received the error "Database access errors - see Error Log" during a system backup (at its actual beginning).
We have a SUN Ultra5 system with external tape unit (dat4 ); in CMS this unit is configured as /dev/rmt/0c.
Using tar command the tape worked.
